AI Assurance
State Government case study

A Queensland government department engaged Evinact to develop a repeatable assurance process to guide the design, development and build of AI-enabled products.
The context
As the department explored opportunities to leverage AI to improve services and operational outcomes, it recognised the need to ensure AI initiatives were supported by robust governance, risk management and assurance practices. Given the rapidly evolving nature of AI technologies and increasing expectations around responsible use, the department sought to establish confidence that AI solutions could be deployed safely, ethically and in accordance with legislative and policy obligations.
Evinact was engaged to conduct an AI assurance assessment, evaluating the department’s approach to governance, privacy, security, transparency, accountability and risk management. The engagement provided practical guidance to support the responsible adoption of AI and ensure that future AI-enabled services deliver value while maintaining public trust and confidence.
The method
Evinact conducted an independent AI assurance assessment to evaluate the department’s readiness to deploy and operate AI solutions in a safe, ethical and controlled manner. The assessment examined key areas of responsible AI, including:
- Privacy, data protection and security
- Reliability, robustness and safety
- Governance and oversight
- Transparency and explainability
- Contestability and human oversight
- Accountability and risk management.
Our approach involved reviewing existing controls, policies, processes and solution designs against responsible AI principles and organisational requirements. We assessed the maturity of governance arrangements, identified risks and control gaps, and evaluated the organisation’s capability to manage AI throughout its lifecycle.
The assessment also established the actions required to achieve readiness for service, providing a clear pathway for transitioning AI solutions from development and testing into operational use while maintaining appropriate controls, assurance and oversight.
