Streamlining ICT with a modern enterprise architecture model

Federal & State Government case study

cloud enterprise architecture model

Evinact partnered with a government department to develop a modern Enterprise Architecture Model to streamline ICT functions.

The context

The Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) works to protect Queensland’s environment, heritage, and culture while supporting innovation and economic growth. As part of the Queensland Government’s push for a Digital Economy Strategy and Roadmap, DETSI wanted a strong foundation for managing its digital systems in line with the Queensland Government Enterprise Architecture (QGEA) requirements.

Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a blueprint that defines how an organisation is structured and operates. It provides end-to-end visibility, enabling a comprehensive understanding of where your business stands, its current investments, and identifying opportunities for efficiency and productivity gains.

The method

DETSI engaged Evinact to review their current EA capability and develop a future state EA operating model that will enable them to manage and develop their EA assets going forward effectively.

Evinact’s staged approach involved the following key activities:

  • Initial socialisation of EA benefits for business stakeholders.
  • Department-wide discovery of existing EA processes, capabilities and artifacts.
  • Design an enterprise architecture model that fits DETSI’s needs.
  • Refine and align ICT governance processes and structure to integrate EA ways of working.
  • Development of a multi-horizon implementation plan that outlines tranches of initiatives to transition to an EA practice, defines ways of working, good governance and capability uplift.

The impact

With the new enterprise architecture model and implementation plan in place, DETSI can reduce ICT costs by streamlining operations.

The department can remove duplicate legacy systems, which improves efficiency and lowers maintenance overhead and existing ICT assets are now reused more effectively, delivering better value for investment. Planning for ICT projects can also become faster and more agile, allowing DETSI to respond quickly to changing needs.

Finally, the new EA model ensures ICT investments are strategic and efficient, and resources are used where they deliver the greatest impact for the community and environment.
